Divorce is hard, and raises difficult emotions for the adults going through it, and their families. A recent Wall Street Journal article on toxic positivity raises an important point, not just for professionals in the field but for anyone with a friend or family member navigating divorce.

Acknowledging and exploring negative feelings, without instantly providing a ‘fix’, is crucial in enabling the person to process the emotion and move on. But that must come with some hope for the future, and, ideally, the opportunity for a narrative to be built which doesn’t resort to blame, as this can simply perpetuate conflict and leave the people involved trapped in a cycle of negativity.

Forcing ourselves or others to always be positive can be harmful to our well-being and our relationships. There’s a better approach.
