Is It A Choice Between A Good Divorce Or Getting Legal Advice?

It’s a terrible state of affairs that many divorcing couples are scared to get legal advice because they think getting lawyers involved will simply raise the tension and drive up costs. And it’s easy to see why. Legal fees in contested cases (which end up in court proceedings) continue to go up and Family Judges are desperate for couples to resolve their differences away from the court arena.

But does that mean doing it without lawyers? No it doesn’t. Divorce is a legal process and it’s worrying if people are scared to get legal advice.

Know that getting good legal advice and having a conciliatory, respectful divorce are not mutually exclusive. You just need to choose the right lawyers. And that isn’t just us! There are an increasing number of law firms who have followed our lead and now advise couples together. And joint legal advice isn’t right for everyone. If you are struggling in a relationship with an abuse dynamic, you will need independent legal advice. But again, choose wisely. There are many fantastic solicitors and barristers who will work with you in a way which is constructive and dignified.

This is your divorce. If you want legal advice, get it. But if the way that advice is being delivered, or conducted, doesn’t sit right with you then shop around- there are many other options out there for you.
