The latest Family Solutions Group report puts an important issue back into focus: how we can better support children living through family separation. We were pleased to attend the launch, led by Lord Justice Cobb, and to hear a clear call for children to be placed front and centre in separation processes.
Speakers from across the legal and political worlds shared a common message. Children should not be treated as an afterthought when families separate. Their needs, wellbeing, and day-to-day experience should remain in view throughout the process.
That message strongly reflects our own approach at The Divorce Surgery. Divorce and separation may begin as an adult decision, but children live with the effects too. The way parents, professionals, and wider systems respond can shape how secure and supported they feel.
One of the most notable ideas raised at the launch was the proposal for a Commissioner for Separated Families. The aim is to give greater political focus to an issue that affects many children and touches many parts of public life. Family separation does not only involve legal questions. It can affect home life, emotional wellbeing, education, and longer-term stability.
