Normalising Stress and Divorce

Divorce is stressful. There have been many studies confirming this but now there is another. The Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory puts divorce and marital separation at numbers 2 and 3 in the stress index, only surpassed by death of a spouse, and ranking ahead of jail time and being fired.

As with everything, you can take this in two ways. We think it’s helpful to know that divorce is stressful, and to normalise it. Couples should know that accessing emotional support (not with lawyers but with counsellors and therapists) should be a standard part of their toolkit. But also that stress can be managed if supported properly. And if some of the stress emanates from an adversarial legal process, then engage in ways to reduce that element: working together if you can and sharing advisors (including a lawyer) if you’d like.
