The Divorce, Dissolution & Separation Bill Receives Royal Assent

The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill received Royal Assent on 25th June 2020, and so it is now officially an Act of Parliament. We understand that the likely timescale for the law to come into effect is Autumn 2021.

When it does, it will change the way separating couples petition for divorce, meaning they no longer have to ascribe blame for the reasoning behind their decision and can, if they want to, make a joint application for divorce.

At The Divorce Surgery we champion the rights of separating couples to treat divorce as a shared problem to be navigated together, and continue to lobby for a change so that every aspect of divorce, from petition through to making arrangement for children and agreeing of division of finances, can be started, and for many couples completed, in a joint way.
