This Week Is Justice Week!

Justice week is a collaboration across the justice sector to improve access to justice by building public support and understanding for the rule of law and justice, increasing public understanding of the role of government in the justice system and identifying and securing support for actions that could improve justice.

The Bar Council will be hosting and sharing a series of guest blogs on different access to justice issues during the week, and you can find out more here: Justice Week 2023.

This year, the Bar Council is asking barristers to say what justice means to them. The Divorce Surgery donates 1% of its profits each year to access to justice charities. For us, justice means two things:

  1. Justice should be accessible, so that no matter who you are or how big or small your issue may seem, there is a way to access the legal answer quickly and cost-effectively; and
  2. Justice doesn’t have to be adversarial. In the family law sphere particularly, we need to disentangle the word ‘justice’ from notions of courtroom battles and conflict. For many families navigating separation, a ‘just’ outcome is one which meets the needs of their family as a whole (and incidentally that’s the test family judges apply too).
